The mood in the house instantly became heavy. Cirice had been hoping to at least get to dessert before any uncomfortable topics came up. Her mother’s gaze was flickering between Cirice and her father.

“What’s this?” Enid asked, her voice went up an octave.

“Yes,” Cirice said slowly, “I have heard, some weeks ago, actually. The publisher of her little book somehow found out how to get in contact with me and asked if I had any… quotes… for the book backing.”

“Surely you declined,” her father exclaimed. “The audacity!”

“Of course I did!” Cirice said indignantly.

“What are you two talking about?” Enid cried, standing up. “Don’t leave Elliot and I in the dark!”

“A non-magical – we don’t say ‘muggle’ anymore, Daddy, it’s taken on the tone of… well, you know what, these days – woman has written a book,” Cirice began. “It’s… largely fictional, the characters, and events, and such, but…”

“It takes place at the school, Enid, she’s outed our entire community,” Able interrupted.
