Opening the door to the cottage buffeted Cirice with warm air and smell of freshly baked bread. She gave a smile as she entered the front room far enough to make room for Elliot and began removing her coat, boots, and scarf. She heard Elliot chuckle behind her as he noticed the pair of slippers that were awaiting him next to the boot tray.
They were comically large and had the plush head of a deer at the toe and the white-tail at the heel. They were Cirice’s mother traditional pair of guest slippers, the ones she put out when she did not know the person who would be arriving.
“Is this a good sign, or…?” Elliot began.
“Or something,” Cirice said with a grin.
