The road to the village was deserted. It had grown much later than Cirice had planned on she and Elliot leaving. The gravel crunched beneath her heeled boots and dried leaves swirled around the couple as they walked. Cirice had her arm linked through Elliot’s, his body beside her keeping her warm. She tucked a curl of turquoise hair back behind her ear after the breeze blew it free.

“You’re quiet tonight,” Elliot said softly. When Cirice didn’t answer, he added: “You’re still worrying about that woman, aren’t you?”

That got Cirice’s attention. “She could do some real damage, Elliot,” she replied. “Not only to the school, but to the entire community.”

Elliot gave a shrug and stopped in the middle of the path, pulling Cirice to a stop beside him. “No one will read it, I’m sure,” he said, pulling her closer to him. He weaved his fingers through hers. “And even if they do, perhaps it is time we stepped out of the shadows.”
